This must have been another storyline that they just came up with out of the air, like the 'Bashir is a changeling' one.
Bashir's dad was cute, but he looked like the absolute last guy in the world who could keep a secret. Plus, there's a lot of cameras around DS9... who knows what could end up on Odo's security logs.
All in all, I can't say I mind the augment Bashir storyline, even with all the trouble it caused, since it gave us the awesome Jack Pack.
